Everyone knows the major Albuquerque attractions, but few know the secrets of Old Town. Listed below are some of what we consider to be the city’s “hidden gems.”
The Old Town Ghost Walk intertwines history, architecture and the spirit world as you tour the streets and alleys of Old Town, discovering its secrets, stories and past residents. This engaging guided walk takes you to places seldom seen by visitors and gives insight into the wild and often violent history of New Mexico. Skeptics, believers and those uncertain are all welcome. During the Christmas holiday season, enjoy “The Ghosts of Christmas Past” tour that combines the history of Old Town with the history and traditions of Christmas. For a complete Old Town ghostly experience, see our Ghost Tour Package.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel is tucked into the far corner of Patio Escondido on San Felipe Street. Open every hour of every day and visited by many, the chapel glows softly by the light of dozens of candles burning, and flowers and gifts are left by the devout. If you visit, observe that the doors are not only open but cannot be closed.
The hidden tree carving can only be seen by entering the parking lot behind San Felipe Neri Church on the east side by San Felipe Street and walking around to the far side of the tree. Hundreds of people pass by each day, but few know the tree’s secret.
The first Albuquerque well is the centerpiece of Patio Market. Now surrounded by historic buildings containing shops, the well was no doubt an important gathering place in the village.
